What Is Acupuncture & Cupping Therapy?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points in muscle and connective tissue. The needle stimulates local nerve fibres, which influences how pain is signalled at the spinal level, increases circulation through the treated tissue, and reduces the resting tension of overactive muscle.
Cupping applies negative pressure to lift skin, fascia, and superficial muscle away from the layers beneath. That decompression creates movement at the tissue interfaces where restriction limits glide, and draws circulation into areas that have been chronically tight.
The two are often combined in the same appointment, with the balance determined by what your assessment identifies.
Treatment may support:
- Reduced pain and muscular tension
- Improved joint range of motion
- Local circulation through restricted tissue
- Nervous system regulation and sleep quality
- Recovery between training sessions
- Headache and jaw tension patterns
Who Is Acupuncture & Cupping Therapy For?
You may benefit from acupuncture and cupping therapy if you are dealing with:
Persistent Pain and Muscular Tension
Acupuncture and cupping can support individuals dealing with ongoing pain, stiffness, and recurring tension. This may include neck and shoulder pain, low back discomfort, tension headaches, jaw clenching, postural strain from desk work, or pain patterns that return despite treatment elsewhere.
Restriction, Injury, and Movement Limitation
Many clients seek treatment when tissue feels restricted or an old injury has healed without fully returning to function. This can include shoulder impingement, hip and glute restriction, tennis and golfer’s elbow, plantar heel pain, and compensation patterns that limit how the body moves.
Stress, Sleep, and Recovery
Treatment shifts autonomic balance toward a recovery state, which is why clients also use it for stress-related tension, difficulty getting to sleep, and recovery between demanding training sessions. Active clients use acupuncture and cupping to restore tissue quality across a training block.

What to Expect During Your First Session
Your care begins with a 60-minute Initial Assessment, where our Naturopathic Doctor takes the time to understand your health history, injury timeline, movement patterns, current concerns, and overall health goals. A physical assessment follows, covering range of motion, tissue quality, and the specific points and segments involved in your presentation.
You are treated during this same appointment. From there, your practitioner creates an individualized treatment plan covering frequency, expected response timeline, and anything worth addressing between visits.

FAQ
Yes. Acupuncture and cupping treatments performed by our Naturopathic Doctor are eligible under the naturopathy benefit of most extended health plans. Coverage limits and per-visit caps vary by provider, and some plans require a specific practitioner designation, so we recommend confirming with your insurer. We provide a receipt following your session for submission to your benefits provider. No tax applies to these treatments.
Acupuncture and cupping are for individuals looking to address pain, tension, restriction, and recovery at the tissue and nervous system level. It may be suitable for those dealing with recurring pain, headaches, movement limitation, old injuries that have not fully resolved, stress-related tension, or difficulty recovering between training sessions. It is appropriate for active individuals, desk workers, and clients managing long-standing discomfort
The needles are approximately the diameter of a human hair, and most insertions are not felt. What clients usually notice is a dull, heavy, or spreading sensation at the point, which indicates the needle has engaged the tissue as intended. Needling into a tight band of muscle can produce a brief twitch and short ache that settles within minutes.
Our Naturopathic Doctor gives you a specific recommendation at the end of your Initial Assessment. As a general pattern, recent or acute presentations often respond within two to four treatments, while long-standing patterns are treated across six or more. The 6 Treatment Plan is structured for that second group.
The marks are capillary-level discolouration caused by negative pressure drawing circulation into the tissue, rather than bruising from impact. Intensity reflects how congested the local tissue is, and marks typically resolve within three to seven days. Not every client marks.
Wear comfortable, movable clothing (athletic wear preferred). Access to the treated area is required, and gowns and shorts are available on site.
Disclose both at intake. Certain points and cupping intensities are modified or avoided during pregnancy, and anticoagulant use changes how cupping is applied. Your Naturopathic Doctor will adjust treatment accordingly.
Light training is usually fine. Heavy loading of an area treated with deeper needling is generally deferred by around 24 hours, since muscle tone has been deliberately altered. Your practitioner will give you a specific instruction based on what was treated.
