Text neck from poor posture

Text neck is a term we are all guilty of practicing. Prolonged used of smartphone use causes an  increase in forward pressure and load on the cervical spine. Forward neck posture causes an increase pressure on the small cervical muscles, joints and disc. Kenneth Hansraj, a New York back surgeon, stated, “As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds at 15 degrees, 40 pounds at 30 degrees, 49 pounds at 45 degrees and 60 pounds at 60 degrees.”

Poor posture can lead to excessive weight on joints, muscle, and discs. Degeneration can lead to arthritis manifesting as neck pain.

Four ways to avoid text neck:

  1. Avoid prolonged texting
  2. Use microphone option
  3. Use voice recognition
  4. Alter texting positions
  5. Strengthen long and weak muscles and lengthen short and tight muscles through exercise and therapy.

The domino effect of poor posture

The effect of posture on health is becoming more evident. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, heart rate and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture. One of the most common postural problem caused by text neck is forward head carriage.  Forward head carriage requires constant neck muscle effort to keep your head upright this has a domino effect down the entire body and spine.

Maintaining  good posture is essential for optimal health. With a little effort guidance from your Chiropractor, you can be prevent pain and injury caused by poor posture. Take advantage of our complimentary postural and spinal analysis to see if you have become a victim to the Text Neck!

How to alleviate neck pain

Over 80% of North Americans will suffer from neck pain in their lifetime. Our necks are susceptible to injury of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. By being aware of our posture, performing regular stretching and strengthening exercises, and chiropractic treatments, together we can prevent and alleviate neck pain. At Kx Yorkville, our goal is to treat the underlying cause of neck pain and the associated symptoms.

Common causes of neck pain

  • Neck pain from texting or using the computer for too long
  • Waking up with horrible neck pain or you couldn’t move your neck
  • Whiplash from car accident or sporting injury
  • Neck pain from trauma like slips or falls
  • Stiff neck from shovelling snow or gardening

All of the above are causes of neck pain. Vertebral misalignment is the most common cause of neck pain. There are other causes for neck pain such as arthritis, disc herniation and degeneration. Problems associated with a misalignment of the spine in the neck area can also result in severe pain in the shoulders, muscle spasms and headaches.

What is your assessment?

Your assessment begins with a thorough health history intake. This includes onset of symptoms, diet assessment (which can cause systemic inflammation), minor and major trauma. We then perform an orthopedic assessment, range of motion test and gait and spinal pattern test.

At Kx’s we believe in treating the CAUSE not just the symptoms. Injury in one location of the body may actually manifest as dysfunction in a remote part of the body. This is the reason why a comprehensive assessment is imperative in making a diagnosis and developing a treatment plan.

What is your treatment?

After reviewing your assessment and generating a diagnosis, the chiropractor will provide report of finding and present a treatment. The treatment plan details such as frequency and duration of the visits, goal setting and re-evaluation date.

Chiropractic manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by any major or minor trauma. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Proper spinal alignment can allow proper nervous system function, spinal re-alignment is achieved through chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic can be used in conjunction with other therapies such as Acupuncture, Craniosacaral, Kinesiotaping, strength and conditioning.

Do you suffer from lower back pain?

Dr. Frank Nhan, Chiropractor at KX Yorkville, talks about lower back pain and how treatment along with strengthening and stretches can help.

The most common condition, by far, of all the musculoskeletal injuries that I see in my chiropractic practice is lower back pain. Low back pain causing sciatica can be one of the most debilitating of them all. The most common question I get from patients is usually how do I get better? Which is then followed by, how did this happen?

Causes of lower back pain

Many times, people will tell me all they did was bent down to pick up a pen or to put on their socks and threw out their back. How is this even possible? The cause in these cases cannot be attributed simply to just the act prior to the pain onset, but rather, this may merely be the straw that broke the camel’s back. The real culprit is usually a case of repetitive strain injury or a cumulative trauma disorders. This can be from either sitting for prolong periods, or repetitive movements or exercises with poor posture or form. To figure out what exact structures are injured, a full chiropractic examination would have to be done.

Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Stretching and Strengthening for Low Back Pain

At Kx Yorkville, this would include a full health history, physical examination which may include range of motion, neurological and orthopedic testing, along with functional movement screening. Chiropractors are experts in treating all different kinds of lower back pain and sciatica, or what some would describe as sharp shooting leg pain due to a pinched nerve in the back. For those seeking pain relief, effective treatments that I like to include in my treatment plans which have been scientifically proven to help include manual spinal mobilization, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and specific back stretches and exercises. Stretches and exercises can either be very helpful if done properly, or very damaging if the wrong ones are performed. To find out which ones are best suited for your lower back pain, make sure you get diagnosed first, which will then dictate which back stretches and exercises would be most effective for you.
